Access 2 Arts
During May 2014 – Access 2 Arts and YELL SOS worked with a student Victoria Wilkins. We assisted Victoria in successfully applying for £1,200.00 of UnLtd funding in conjunction with the University of Hull. This contributed to YELL SOS’s support in order to deliver an ACCESS 2 ARTS pilot scheme. This provided a ten week experience for 10 individuals wishing to access the Foundation Diploma in Art. To achieve this it was necessary for those individuals without formal qualifications to develop a portfolio so they could evidence their art making. The portfolio enabled their access to the Foundation Diploma in Art at Yorkshire Coast College,Westwood, Scarborough. The ten week course offered a relaxed, informal space in which to develop a portfolio. Alongside this, learners were given the opportunity to develop functional skills in writing skills, using a computer and navigating the web for research and communication, developing a social networking persona and necessary numeracy support to ensure everyone felt ready for returning to formal education. Everyone had the opportunity to receive one-to-one support to create a portfolio of achievement. This course prepared students for access to Further and Higher Education. We saw learners and volunteers grow in confidence, gain a real rapport with YELL SOS Volunteers and enjoy working with guest teachers from Learning Societies who were on hand to deliver specific sessions such as how to use Web 2.0 tools to create a Personal Learning Network. These sort of sessions helped artists build their online presence and develop their online communities of enquiry as they gathered people around them who are helping them on their learning journey. Those who were interested in being considered for one of the ten places, were asked to e-mail a copy of their CV or a short statement explaining why they thought one of these funded places should be theirs and what medium and materials they wanted to use to create their portfolio. They provided details of their artistic influences, the length of time making art and reasons why this was something they spent their time doing. Finally, They provided contact details so we could communicate with them. We hope to provide this again in the coming year.
